Let's downplay this some more shall we ? Experts Say Radiation Leak Won't Reach High PlainsCARLSBAD -- A radiation leak in Carlsbad, New Mexico leads to fear of the High Plains skies. But experts say there's no reason to fear. This all started when radiation alarms at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, known as WIPP, went off earlier this month. In fact, officials at the plant have confirmed there is an elevated amount of radiation in and around the plant. So, worry was spreading whether radiation that's caught in the atmosphere, could spread as far as the High Plains. Ron Chesser, Director of the Center for Environmental Radiation Studies at Texas Tech University says there is nothing to worry about. "With the magnitude of material that is moved out, there is absolutely no cause for any alarm in Lubbock, Amarillo, or even Carlsbad." said Chesser. "This is more or less a passive type of release" Professor Chesser says the leak could be blamed on two scenarios. Either there's been a breach in the containers that hold the chemicals, or this was just an isolated incident. Copyright 2014 Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc. All rights reserved.
