Sadly, the dropping of the bomb was probably the best thing that ever could have happened for us all. Know that, I am thoroughly anti nuclear and anti war.
There is too much revisionist history around this BOMB's Use on Japan topic. Mostly knee jerk stuff emotional stuff. Monday morning quarterbacking.
New myths = The bomb use did not save lives.. Horse poopoo... The bomb brought a rapid emphatic end to the war. A war that was killing at least a million month and was about to go on the upswing in a crescendo of death to its conclusion .
FACT = (not widely realized in well fed and not ravaged by war America) The world was starving at the end of WW2. Japan and East Asia were on the brink of even more massive famines everywhere. Even 6 more months of war could have cost millions of lives - perhaps, 10s of millions from starvation alone. For WW2, All-death totals are perhaps twice as high as have been reported, because of the lack of food and the way the actuarial reporting of deaths did take place - you died because of the war - but, it was recorded as a natural death (just like nuclear victims are not reported of today as nuclear victims). Modern war is made on civilians. There is chronic under reporting in war death totals - Google - "Democide" - the new study of casualties in conflicts.
FACT = Had an invasion taken place there is every reason to believe the causalities of Okinawa would have been repeated on a much greater scale with millions upon millions of dead in Japan (mostly Japanese). Not to mention the on going bombing campaign by the Allies. Also, the war was in full swing in other places throughout Asia where Japan had major armies in the field - millions more could have died. There is no clear indication the Japanese would have surrendered after the Soviets entered the war. You cannot change the mindset of the Allie's position of unconditional surrender after the fact either.. It was what it was. Yes, the bomb could have been demo dropped - But, that would have taken time - Time that killed maybe millions.
More Myth = The bomb was a secret... The BOMB was out of the bag even before WW2... Every major nation combative nation on earth was working on it during the war. And they would/could have the BOMB in 15 more years. The BOMB was not an American only toy going into the future.
That the bomb was used on people - sadly and was perhaps for our future good, did have the effect of making its future use abhorrent to all. What would have happened in Cuba in 62 or Berlin 61 or Korea in 50 had the memory of the bombs horrors had not been there. A real nuclear war maybe..
I am sad that the BOMB was used and more sad that it created. It's threat is not gone... We use nuclear weapons daily (depleted "deadly - forever toxic" uranium) .. Nuclear powerhouses have been bombed in the past as military targets and are future targets (Israel's Iran war plans) The nuclear mining, manufactured and used fuel wastes are targets and tools of future war - not to mention the on-going health and planetary risks they present even from accident and pollution.
We have enough on our plates without rewriting history of the use of the Bomb on Japan. It is wrong and a waste of time IMO

Well "T" I'm not sure what happened to the permissions in this little nook, guests aren't supposed to be able to post, one of the privileges of being a member here is the ability to participate. While you make some valid points I'm not sure what you are talking about when you say "rewriting history" in regards to this post, or what you think is mythical about us making the bomb, while others were trying. Both are well known facts, it doesn't make the program to MAKE the materials and eventually the bomb any less secret ... Anyway, if you wish to reply, please create an account and join us
