Nuclear Waste Dumping in the world's oceansThirteen nations have used Oceanic dumping/sequestration of nuclear/radioactive waste in the past. A moratorium on the practice has been in place since 1993. Several treaties were ratified which contributed to this world wide ban: - The Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter 1972
- The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal 1992
- Marpol 73/78 is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978
