KRQE.com : Results from WIPP leak releasedCARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – New details were released Wednesday afternoon about the radiation leak at the WIPP site and just how much radiation was released. The leak happened Feb. 14 in an area underground that has remained off limits since. On Wednesday, the company that’s been testing the air and filters released their findings. They say at the height of the radiation leak, one air filter measured at more than 1,300 BQ’s of americium and nearly 700 BQ’s of plutonium. The level deemed safe by the EPA is 37 BQ’s, but that is not the radioactive material that was released into the environment. There is a second filter which leads to the outside testing. It shows levels of 1.81 BQ and .22 BQ, well below the EPA’s standards. The company that tested the samples says that’s evidence the filters worked. They continue to take samples on a daily basis and say they continue to show reduced levels of radiation. They also say samples will be taken of soil and ground water in the area to be tested. The DOE is holding a town hall Thursday night to update the public on the situation. It’s at 5:30 p.m. at the Walter Gerrels Performing Arts Center. krqe.com/2014/03/05/results-from-wipp-leak-released/
