KOAT : WIPP officials close to knowing cause of radiation leak11:05 PM MDT Apr 20, 2014 CARLSBAD, N.M. —Officials at the Waste Isolation Plant near Carlsbad said they're close to determining the cause of February's radiation leak. "There will be progress to report in terms of what might have been the cause," said former State Rep. John Heaton at a town hall meeting which was called to update people on the progress at the Waste Isolation Plant. The country's only underground nuclear waste dump has been closed since February after an underground truck fire and then a radiation leak. Crews have only recently been able to get back inside the facility. After the latest trip underground, officials think they found the location of the leak. "The more they went into panel 7, the more it started becoming more widespread," said WIPP deputy recovery manager Tammy Reynolds. "They were picking up contamination more frequent." Panel 7 is a storage unit. Inspectors plan to go back down and explore things further, but in case the radiation levels pose too much of a threat, robots will go underground instead. "Robot operators have already been to the WIPP site, received all of the training to go to the underground," said Reynolds. Twenty-one workers tested positive for contamination after the leak in February, but officials say their level of exposure was too low to pose any health risks. www.koat.com/news/wipp-officials-close-to-knowing-cause-of-radiation-leak/25577682
